Yesterday was Friday, so you know what that means – FRIDAY FUNDAY! We love Fridays, because that means we put away the workbooks and regular curriculum and pull out the fun stuff! We try to make Friday’s about having as much fun as possible while still keeping it educational.
We started our day by playing some math games on the computer (www.abcya.com) and then doing some independent reading using the “Epic!” app on the iPad. It was a great way to ease into our busy day in the early morning while we were all still trying to really wake up.
For geography/history this week we studied the state of Connecticut, so we used our 50 States book to review what we had learned. The girls used the ipad to scan the codes in the book which took them to fun activities and videos that taught more information about the state. (I still plan to write a review about this book, it just hasn’t happened yet. I’ll try to get to it this week!)
For “recess” we went outside to get some fresh air and vitamin D while we still can (winter’s not too far away!) The girls pretended to be Digimon flying in a space ship. The “club house” (top of the slide) was the space ship and the only way to power it was by swinging on the swing set. I love their imagination!
For our science lesson we attempted to do this really cool project with milk, dawn dish soap, and food coloring that when mixed together causes a really cool reaction, but unfortunately it was a dud. I’ll make a blog post all about that later, so be on the lookout for that one. I’m determined to make it work, because I’ve seen others pull it off, so we’re going to tweak the experiment a little and share that another time. Be on the lookout for that!
When that experiment failed, we pulled out our meteor kit and decided to do that instead. Basically we made our own “meteors” out of these crystals using the kit and then created “craters” using flour to explain what happens when meteors hit the moon or another planet. It was a pretty fun experiment, and the girls learned quite a bit while doing it!
For our art lesson we learned about positive and negative space and then worked on a colorful collage. (I also learned my 8 year old apparently really loves glue! I think there was more glue on the collage than there was in the bottle by the time she was done. Time to stock up on glue sticks!)
We even squeezed in some physical fitness time using the Wii. The girls love to play the balance games!
Our favorite part of the day was our language arts lesson. Every Friday we work on our creative writing by letting the girls write about whatever they want. Their only goal is to try to make their stories more creative by using adjectives to make their sentences more descriptive).
In addition to our creative writing, we pulled out some “Mad Libs!” Do you guys remember these? I used to do them as a kid all the time! We were all laughing hysterically at the funny stories we created while girls practiced their adjectives, nouns, verbs, pronouns, etc (which is something they tend to struggle with at times). Now that I’ve introduced them to the Mad Libs, they can’t get enough and have been doing them on their own! I’m okay with it, because the more fun they have with it, the more practice they get in. Win win!
By the end of the day I was beyond exhausted. I love how Friday Funday keeps the kids happy and learning at the same time, but it sure is a lot of work for mom! No matter how tired I get, by the end of the day I’m always feeling so blessed that I was able to have so much fun with my girls while they were learning. I’m not always so good at bringing this type of “fun” to my homeschool everyday which is why doing it all in one day on Fridays like this works so well for us. If you’re like me, I highly recommend incorporating Friday Funday to your homeschool schedule!
