This past week was beyond crazy, and yesterday I was far too tired to function properly, so we decided that we needed to keep our Friday Funday really laid back for this week. While we normally save the elaborate science experiments or art projects for Fridays, this week we decided to lay low and keep it simple. Check out how we were able to still have a lot of fun and keep our day educational as well!
Friday Funday Week 8:
As always, on Friday’s we put away the work books and curriculum, and pull out the FUN!
Due to all the crazy from last week we fell behind a bit in science, so we started out our day by playing catch up. This still qualified as fun because we got to do a quick experiment to learn how light travels through things, and drew some pictures about the project in our science journals.
After our science lesson we took a couple hours taking turns on the the iPad and the computer. The girls used this time to play math games on abcya.com and spent some time reading independently.
For our social studies we pulled out one of our favorite educational games – Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego!
Then we got really goofy and practiced our nouns, verbs, adjectives and more by filling out a couple of “Mad Libs”. This is one of my favorite activities because they have really struggled in the past with remembering some of the parts of speech, so it’s really helped them get in some extra practice. Plus, the giggling and laughter over the funny stories has me laughing and giggling right along with them. There’s nothing better than belly laughing with your kids! Here’s one of the silly stories we came up with today:
Finally we finished off our school week by watching educational TV. This weeks cartoons of choice: Wild Kratts and Word World!
As you can see, its completely possible to take it easy, learn, and still have fun all at the same time. The most effort I put into this day was playing Carmen Sandiego, and all I was doing was playing a game with my girls! The rest of the time I sat here in my recliner relaxing while the girls also took it easy on the couch. Sometimes it does a homeschooling mom (and kid’s) soul some good to just sit back and take it easy once in a while!
Here’s what else we studied in our homeschool this week:
- Regrouping 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction problems
- The state of Maine
- How the human eye see’s color
- What causes the microwave to cook our food
- How to sign different words and phrases in ASL (American Sign Language)
- Reviewed (simple) subjects and predicates
- Sentence fragments
- Main parts of a computer
- How data is stored on a computer
- Practiced typing skills
- How to send and receive emails
How did you have fun in your homeschool this week? Do you have some favorite activities you like to do to keep the education flowing when you’re tired and really need a break? Please share in the comments so we can all bounce idea’s off of each other!

We love Mad Libs, too. You have some great ideas for adding in fun!
We often pull out games, movies, kids and puzzles when we want a “day off” that we can still count for school.
